What Does it mean to you

Updated: Mar 22, 2021

What do you think of when you see a heart? What does that shape symbolise to you? Most if not all people will look at that and think love. It has become an international symbol of love that one day out of a year your hubby, wife, or children will give you something with this shape of a show of their love to you. When you see a cross what does that symbolise to you? For some it may be just two pieces of wood nailed together to make a cool shape, the meaning to them is meaningless. To those who believe in the cross will say it reminds them of the Savior who died on this cross for our sins. The cross is not meaningless to us, it in fact is the most meaningful and precious symbol that we have. Another symbol that we place a lot of meaning into is our church building. Now don’t get me wrong it is important, we wouldn’t have them if they weren’t, but did Jesus just have church in a building? No in fact his ministry work was done everywhere He went. The Sermon on the Mount was done on a mountain. He preached to thousands on a sea shore and fed them all. These are just two well known examples of this but it just leads us to where I am trying to go. Acts 17:24-29 (MSG) “The God who made the world and everything in it, this Master of sky and land, doesn’t live in custom-made shrines or need the human race to run errands for him, as if he couldn’t take care of himself. He makes the creatures; the creatures don’t make him. Starting from scratch, he made the entire human race and made the earth hospitable, with plenty of time and space for living so we could seek after God, and not just grope around in the dark but actually find him. He doesn’t play hide-and-seek with us. He’s not remote; he’s near. We live and move in him, can’t get away from him! One of your poets said it well: ‘We’re the God-created.’

Well, if we are the God-created, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to think we could hire a sculptor to chisel a god out of stone for us, does it? In these times when we are not able to meet in the actual church building does not mean that we can’t be the church. We have the Holy Spirit within us, we are the temple, the church, we are the building that Jesus was talking about. We are the symbol of God’s love in times of stress and uncertainty, and I must say that we have stepped into this role in many amazing ways. Church is still happening even while social distancing. We have been reaching out to each other over the phone, on social media, and even when we go out of our house and into our cars to drive around town to pray for our town. We have been praying for the first responders, those who work in the hospitals, nursing homes, and hospices, and those who work in businesses that are deemed essential. Everything that we do in the name of God is being His church. Not only are we being the church, but we are also showing love and isn’t that what God wants from us. Yours in Christ Heather
