When I was little I loved going to my Grandma's in the country. I can still see the house in my memory. Two story with a black shingled roof, light green siding, a small front porch. You could see all this as you come into a curve. It would always excite me, what would be going on today while we visited. As you come around the curve you could see the huge back deck, large garden, and the horse shoe pits. As you pull into the gravel driveway you see the big shady tree, the large shed and dog house, the extra yard to play in, and the garage. As you get out of the car you walk up to the side door, and out of the corner of your eye you can see the well. Just the top of it but you knew it was there.
I was always fascinated with this well. It was covered but I wondered how deep does this well go. Was it like the wells you would throw your pennies in and make wishes? Could you see the bottom? We were always warned as kids that we could not under any circumstances play near it or try to take the heavy lid off. Still I always wondered about it. The only true fact that I knew about this well was, the water was horrible to drink. It stank so bad, you would think that there were dead fish in there. Let me tell you the moments that I forgot what the water tasted like and grabbed a sip of water from the hose, it was not a fun thing. Just thinking about it now my tongue is drying up.
When the Bible talks about the woman at the well getting water this memory evokes itself. If that water was anything like my grandma's well I would not want to drink from it. Though in the Bible the well was a place to meet others, God, and to get water. Hagar sees God at a well Genesis 21: 17-21, Issac's servant met Rebekah at the well, Genesis 24: 10-18, Jacob met Rebekah at a well, Genesis 29: 9-12, Jesus met the Samarian woman at the well, John 4: 4-14 . This just shows a few examples, but many spectacular things happen when people meet there. In many places in the Bible the well was the central point of the community. While the running water may not taste great, the living water we find at the well will sustain us eternally.
John 4:14 (KJV) 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life."
So lets meet at the well and praise our heavenly father.
Yours in Christ
