I have been working on a family genealogy, tracing our steps back to the 1500's. I was shocked by how big my tree actually is. At the foundation is me,the next part of the tree has my mom, aunt and uncles, the stalk of the tree. My grandparents are then the section where the branches begin to grow out. This is the fun part, finding people that you may have never met. My tree branches out to 20 or more branches. You can follow the line and read the stories and hopefully see the pictures of the ancestors that make up your family line. This has been fun knowing that we have three distinct lines, one is Mohawk/African/Caucasian on my great grandma Lola’s line, Iroquois/African/Caucasian on my great grandpa Edward’s side, Cherokee/African/Caucasian on my great grandma Marjorie’s line, and finally African/Caucasian on my great grandpa’s Thomas side. Wow is all that I could say.
While my tree may have errors in it as we have to rely on records that have faded, been lost, or the interpretations are just wrong. The stories are passed down the line through stories of the elders in your life. While some of our family stories have proven true, some have just not stood up to the evidence.
The only genealogical record in human existence that can stand up to the test of time are the ones in the Bible. We find these records in Genesis, Numbers, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, and concerning Jesus in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. While my tree would be most important to just my family and me, these records in the Bible are important for each and every one of us. Why is that important, it’s just a bunch of names and really just so tedious to read?
The historical accuracy proves to us the lineage detailed from Abraham to David and further. We can see the name and know where in the Bible they fit. It shows that we are all connected and part of God’s family, brothers and sisters who have been given life and been saved by the blood of Jesus. It shows that we each have a part to play in bringing the Kingdom to the masses, be that as Leaders in our church and community, It confirms the many prophecies that have passed and are still to come. It shows the diversity of people whom God has used in history. It was not only the saints he called on but the sinners. It stands today and will forever. So next time you are reading your Bible and you think that the genealogy lines are tedious and boring to read, just think of how important the line truly is.
Yours in Christ
