How Do You See God?

Updated: Mar 22, 2021

A few years ago I went on a trip with a friend. We travelled from Calgary to Banff, into BC, and back to Alberta. Now I had never been on a trip like this ever. Most would be a weekend, not two weeks, without my family. This was a trip that would change my life in ways I had never thought would happen. Before I left I had prayed Lord, break my heart for the things that break Your heart. I had been warned to watch what you pray for. Oh I was so not ready for what the Lord had in store for me. After one day in the mountains I was ready to come home. I actually lasted about 4 or 5 extra.

I learned about the devastation of a whole town, I faced my fear of heights and anxiety with people by walking up to see a waterfall up close in a little cave with only a metal barrier to stop a fall. I came away with an understanding of my calling, my true weaknesses, and an understanding of God's creation. Though I still thought of mountains as just big rocks, drive five miles and you get to see the other side of the rock. So to me if they weren't there it wouldn't be a big loss. I felt like the verses in Isaiah 40: 3-5 Thunder in the desert! “Prepare for God’s arrival! Make the road straight and smooth, a highway fit for our God. Fill in the valleys, level off the hills, Smooth out the ruts, clear out the rocks. Then God’s bright glory will shine and everyone will see it. Yes. Just as God has said."

Years later I would fully grasp the beauty in the mountains when my aunt came out from Ontario. This time I prayed "Let me see you Lord." See still don't learn to be careful what you pray for. Thankfully He took it easy on me. The picture in the cover I though looked a if it was the throne of God. I don't know how I missed it before. To me this trip, despite my fear of heights I felt if I could just climb this mountain to the top and sat on one of the peaks I could glimpse just a small piece of God's glory. The rest of the trips the mountains took on a new meaning, the lakes look so much bluer then the last time, the paths were easier to walk and my eyes were relishing in His glory, His creation, in His peace. Do you know how beautiful it felt to be a child witnessing all this. I think the break in my heart God made the first time I went to Him, was healed in this trip.

I don't think if we levelled the big rocks and made our paths to God straight we would ever encompass Him. His glory is in the sun setting behind the mountains, glistening off the water, migrating with the animals, and sitting on His throne. The peaks of every mountain that we can climb to the top and praise His name.

Yours in Christ

Heather
